Piloting New Approaches and Innovations 试点新方法与创新
New green building strategies evolve over time, thanks to project teams that help grow the body of knowledge around green building. This can be done in two possible ways. The first approach is to pilot a strategy, which refers to testing and refining strategies and approaches in situations where the goal is clear, but the solutions are still evolving. The other approach is innovation, which refers to the introduction of something entirely new that aligns with the broader goals of green building but has not yet been incorporated as a best practice.

Green building project teams sometimes come up with and/or test out new ideas. This has the potential to not only benefit their project, but the larger green building community as new ideas are refined. Strategies include:
- Creating entirely new ideas for technologies, methods, and pathways for achieving sustainability
- Piloting new ideas that are still being fine-tuned

Project teams pursuing either approach should track the process carefully and publish outcomes, insights, and lessons learned. This allows other project teams to benefit from this knowledge as they try the innovative approach, tweak their methods, or try a completely novel approach to reach a similar goal. This is how the green building movement creates, improves, and refines new strategies.

Many of the entirely new strategies that project teams develop involve the expertise of individuals outside of a traditional project team. Some examples include educators who integrate decarbonization into their teaching curriculum or mental health specialists who help design a healing garden in a private courtyard for survivors of domestic violence. Engaging with the larger community to meet the unique needs of building occupants can create opportunities to develop new approaches to green building.
