Rainwater Management

Excess rainwater is typically referred to as stormwater when it starts to collect and flow across the surface of a site.
When this water falls on hard, impervious surfaces that keep precipitation from percolating through the soil, like asphalt and concrete, it is not able to soak into the ground.
The rainwater runoff, or excess rainwater that collects and flows across the surface of a site, can cause soil erosion and excess sediment in local waterways, exacerbate downstream flooding, and carry harmful chemicals, like motor oil and lawn fertilizers, into the water system.

Green Building Strategies

Green buildings implement rainwater management practices on the project site to capture and retain rainfall in ways that mirror natural systems in order to limit runoff.
Strategies include:
? Minimizing impervious areas by selecting pervious materials that allow precipitation to seep through the surface down to underlying layers of soil and gravel, such as vegetated roofs and porous pavement and grid pavers for parking lots, walkways, and outdoor spaces like patios
? Guiding the water into on?site landscaping features designed to increase the infiltration of rainfall into the ground and slow the rate of runoff, such as dry ponds or rain gardens
? Using natural processes, such as planted channels known as swales, to treat any remaining water that runs off the property
? Capturing and reusing the rainwater for other on?site purposes such as landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, or heating and cooling

Quality of life: When rainwater is not properly managed, downstream flooding disproportionately impacts socially vulnerable populations, such as racial minorities and mobile home residents.
