Material Circularity
Even buildings that embrace sufficiency and material efficiency still require materials and products. If the process of extracting, manufacturing, using, and disposing of these materials is linear, then a project’s material use will have a significant environmental impact.
Green Building Strategies
Green building strategies encourage material circularity, where resources are continuously reused and recycled, reducing dependence on virgin resources and minimizing waste. Using what already exists eliminates the impact of making new materials.
Linear vs. circular approach to materials
- Linear approach to materials 材料线性模式:TAKE(开采)→ MAKE(生产)→ WASTE(废弃)
- Circular approach to materials 材料循环模式:MAKE(生产)→ USE(使用)→ REUSE OR RECYCLE(再利用或回收)→ 重回循环
Strategies that use circularity to reduce demand on new materials and minimize waste include:
- Reusing whole buildings either by renovating them to serve the same function as they did before or adapting them for a new use.
- Reusing as many materials as possible, either from the project site (if there is a preexisting building there to deconstruct) or from other sources of salvaged building materials, such as retail stores or wholesale warehouses.
- Collecting and reusing products from the building during future redesigns. Many building materials (such as carpet tiles or office furniture) might still be in good condition when a redesign occurs and thus can be reused in a different space in the future. If materials cannot be reused or stored for later, they can be donated or sold.
Quality of life
Reuse of buildings and materials can also retain the cultural value of the original materials, such as a historic building, reclaimed wood from a ship, or original bricks or masonry.
