Green building project teams focus on how the project can achieve its highest and best purpose for the specific occupants who need it. Some projects may be well positioned to go beyond current green building best practices into what is known as exemplary performance. Project teams should explore the best possible performance they can achieve. Strategies include:
- Pursuing multiple strategies related to a specific topic to maximize impact (e.g., both preserving greenfield areas on a site and using bird-friendly glass to best support biodiverse habitats)
- Going beyond established thresholds for high-performance green buildings (e.g., demonstrating a significant reduction in embodied carbon through whole-building life-cycle assessment or diverting a significant amount of construction and demolition waste)
