7.4 Water Metering

Water Metering

Water use cannot be managed unless it is measured.
Project teams need to understand the amount of water a building uses and how that amount is distributed between uses.
Water meters measure the flow of water to a project.
Water submeters report the volume of water used by individual systems and fixtures and can alert managers to leaks or other inefficiencies.
This data informs a building’s water?end?use profile, which identifies the most significant uses of water in a project in order to evaluate the impact and benefits of specific sustainability strategies.

Green Building Strategies

Green buildings have both meters that monitor overall water consumption and submeters that track individual systems’ water use.
Project teams use the data from these meters to:
? Identify the most significant uses of water in a project.
? Evaluate the sustainability benefits and cost?effectiveness of specific conservation strategies.
? Log water?use trends, check fixture performance, and identify problems before they begin wasting water.
The most impactful water?conservation measures focus on the systems in the project that use the most water, which varies based on space type.

Quality of life: Early detection of leaks and other problems doesn’t just save water — it also reduces the risk of moisture and mold, which can threaten people’s comfort and health.
