There are many factors that directly impact the health, safety, and well-being of building occupants, including a space's accessibility, lighting, sound levels, temperature, connection to the outdoors, and air quality. Collectively, these factors encompass a space's indoor environmental quality (EQ), which refers to the conditions in a space that affect people's health, safety, well-being, and quality of life.

If a building's indoor environmental quality is poor, it can negatively impact the people inside it. For example, occupants may be uncomfortable or harmed if they are not able to find an elevator or ramp, don't have enough light to see clearly, cannot concentrate because of too much background noise, feel too hot or cold, cannot look out a window, or breathe in chemicals that trigger a headache.

To achieve these goals, project teams follow well-established strategies for providing positive occupant experiences related to all of the elements of indoor environmental quality. A key component to these strategies is to consult building occupants – including operators and custodial staff – about their distinct needs throughout the process. Each project requires a distinct set of strategies to provide good indoor environmental quality.
