Carbon Emissions 碳排放
As discussed in Chapter 4: Integrative Process, Planning, and Assessments, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (also known as carbon emissions) are gases that trap solar energy (heat) in Earth’s atmosphere and prevent that heat from bouncing back into space. This is called the greenhouse effect, which is where greenhouse gases (GHGs) get their name.

Burning fossil fuels produces GHG emissions. While there are several types of GHG, carbon dioxide (CO?) is the main contributor to present-day climate change, which is why GHG emissions are also called carbon emissions.

Green building strategies encourage building decarbonization, the process of reducing or eliminating GHG emissions from buildings. Decarbonization spans multiple areas of green building. For example, reducing transportation-related emissions was discussed in Chapter 5: Location and Transportation. Reducing embodied carbon emissions associated with building materials and construction will be discussed in Chapter 9: Materials and Resources.

This current chapter focuses specifically on a building’s operational carbon emissions from its energy use. As with other green building concepts, this requires projects to follow an integrative process. The project team needs to balance energy-related goals with ensuring the project’s energy-related systems can support occupants’ health, protect the project’s durability, and keep it safe and habitable even when the power goes out.
