Electrification alone will not eliminate a building’s carbon footprint if non-renewable energy is still being used to generate electricity. Non-renewable energy refers to energy sources that exist in finite quantities and cannot be naturally replenished or regenerated within a human timescale, such as fossil fuels (e.g., oil, coal, and gas) and nuclear energy.

Green buildings use integrative decision-making to plan and optimize a project’s energy sourcing. To make informed decisions, project teams need to understand the current and future fuel mix of the electrical grid that serves the project. Project teams can then explore options to use renewable energy, which is derived from sources that are replenished at a faster rate than they are consumed, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.

Projects can use on-site renewable energy, which is consumed at the same location where it is produced, and/or off-site renewable energy, which is generated at a location separate from where it is consumed. Off-site renewable energy can be purchased either:

Directly, from a local source, such as a community solar farm or green power through a local utility.
