To reduce heat islands to minimize impacts on microclimates and human and wildlife habitats.

Nonroof Strategies: Use any combination of the following for at least 50% of the site hardscape (including roads, sidewalks, courtyards, and parking lots): high-albedo materials (SRI of at least 29), open-grid pavement systems (at least 50% pervious), shade from existing trees or structures, shade from new trees within 10 years, or covered parking.

Roof Strategies: Install any combination of the following for at least 75% of the roof area: vegetated roof, high-albedo roof materials (SRI of at least 78 for low-slope, 29 for steep-slope). Combined nonroof and roof strategies must demonstrate overall heat island reduction.

To minimize light pollution and bird collisions to protect nocturnal environments and wildlife.

Option 1. Limit Uplight (1 pt): Ensure all exterior luminaires comply with IES/IDA Model Lighting Ordinance. Maximum uplight rating of 0% for all fixtures on building exterior. Maximum illuminance at the site boundary not to exceed 0.01 footcandles. Use shielded fixtures to prevent light trespass.

Option 2. Bird Collision Reduction (1 pt): Treat at least 90% of all exterior glazing within the bird collision zone (typically the first 60 feet above grade and 60 feet from a green roof) with patterned glass, films, or screens that have a threat factor of 15 or less. Use bird-friendly building materials. Monitor and document bird collisions for at least 1 year.
